This native tree grows throughout the West Coast on rocky shorelines. The tree and its acorns are food for a variety of foraging animals. They slow growers and have evolved to withstand wildfires. The acorns have been used in a variety of ways by Indigenous people as a primary food source and the whole tree has been used for other purposes. They grow best in well draining sunny sites, cliff sides and meadows.
